Sound-Relaxation
This is the term I use to describe what I do with my voice. Sometimes I incorporate words and chants, so it could be called "mantra chanting", but often I simply utter monosyllabic sounds of different keys/tones to create different vibratory sensations. I usually feel inspired on the spot to weave these sounds into a simple song-like structure to accompany the atmosphere of the given space and the vibes of the participants in the class. Occasionally I sing while playing some recorded music, and if this is the case I harmonize with the background music so that the experience and effect of the sound-relaxation can become amplified.
In a typical group session I employ this technique during the shavasana when the participants lie down on the floor to relax for 5-10 minutes at the end of the class. In private classes the clients have often requested me to do this for 40+ minutes to make it a session in its own right.

You would want to try a Sound-Relaxation session if you want to...
- Transition smoothly from a comfortable state to a meditative state
- Nourish yourself with an extra-relaxing, much longer shavasana
- Release yourself faster from physical, emotional, or mental difficulties by consciously directing the subtle vibrations to troubled areas
- Increase the levels of serotonin (the "natural mood stabilizer") and the alpha wave, both crucial for the sense of overall well-being
The following is a list of what I might sing in a session:
- The 7-sound system designed to relax and calm the chakras (major energy centres of the body)
- The 7-sound system designed to heal and balance the chakras
- The 7-sound system designed to awaken and reenergize the chakras
- 5 chants to recognize and honour the raw aspect of the 5 essential elements of yoga and Ayurveda (the sister science of yoga)
- 5 chants to recognize and honour the divine aspect of the 5 essential elements
- 5 chants to honour the 5 types of pranas
- Other chants from different yoga traditions
- Songs from different religious traditions and/or cultures
